How to print photos on T-shirts: A design and technical guide

Banish the “sticker effect” with smart background removal

Uploading a raw rectangular photo can create a visually heavy “sticker effect.” It is especially noticeable with transfer methods or on dark DTG shirts requiring pretreatment and a white underbase.

If the rectangle is intentional, keep it. Otherwise, use a free background remover to isolate the subject of the photo. Transparent negative space lets the garment color join the composition and can make the layout feel lighter. A shaped crop, subtle border or gentle fade can also soften a hard-edged rectangle.

Calibrate the shadow and contrast in your photo

Screens emit light, while fabric reflects it. A luminous phone image may therefore print darker, flatter or less saturated, especially when water-based DTG ink settles into textured cotton.

If faces or important details are hard to see, gently raise exposure or shadows in a basic editor and add a little midtone contrast. A 5–15% adjustment is a useful starting range, not a universal rule: pale photos may need none, while night images may require more selective edits.

Do not expect fabric to match a backlit screen exactly. Garment color, weave, ink, pretreatment and a white underbase all affect the result. For brand-critical color or an important memorial, team or event order, request a proof and print one sample first.

Match skin tones in photos with the contrasting fabric colors

Garment color becomes part of the image when its background is removed. If the shirt closely matches the subject’s skin, hair or clothing, edges can disappear.

A light portrait may blend into beige, while dark hair can vanish against brown or black. Test the cutout on several shirt colors and view it from a distance.

Useful starting pairs include:

  • Light or pale subjects: Navy, charcoal and black can bring details forward.
  • Dark or highly saturated subjects: White, light heather gray and soft pastels can add contrast.

Direct-to-Garment (DTG) vs. sublimation

DTG works like an inkjet for fabric, placing tiny droplets onto the garment. It suits one-off or short-run cotton photo shirts and handles skin tones and fine color variation well.

Sublimation uses heat to bond dye with polyester fibers, producing a breathable image with no raised ink layer. It works best on white or very light polyester. With no white ink, the shirt color influences every pale area, making sublimation unsuitable for dark cotton tees.

What about DTF and screen printing?

DTF transfers reproduce full-color photos on cotton, polyester and blends, although a large rectangle may feel noticeably transfer-like. Photorealistic screen printing is possible with process colors or halftones, but it requires specialist separation and generally suits larger runs.

Will the photo fade over time?

Any print can gradually fade through washing, heat, friction and sunlight, but professional printing and curing should make it last. Longevity also depends on the method, fabric and ink coverage.

In addition to printing your photo with the right technology and fabric, preserve the print with washing best practices:

  1. Turn your garment inside out before washing.
  2. Use cold water, mild detergent and a gentle cycle.
  3. Avoid bleach and fabric softener unless the care label permits them.
  4. Hang dry when possible or tumble dry on low, and never iron directly over the image.

The 300 DPI T-shirt design setup

The standard target is 300 DPI (dots per inch) at the actual print size. Many web images and screenshots lack enough pixels to stay sharp across a 10-inch chest placement.

Pixel count matters more than changing the DPI field. A 3,000-pixel-wide image can print at 10 inches wide at 300 DPI. A 900-pixel-wide image at the same size provides only 90 DPI, even if an editor labels it 300 DPI.

Can you print a low-res photo on a shirt?

Technically, yes, but a low-resolution file may produce pixelated, blurry or fuzzy results. Fine facial features, hair and text are usually the first details to disappear.

If the image is irreplaceable, reduce the print size or try a reputable upscaling tool. Upscaling can smooth edges but cannot reliably recreate missing detail. Use the original camera file instead of a screenshot, social-media download or repeatedly saved message attachment whenever possible.

Selecting the right file format

PNG and high-quality JPEG work well for most photo tees. Use PNG for transparency and JPEG for a full rectangular photo. Export at high quality and avoid repeatedly resaving a JPEG, which adds compression artifacts.

Common photo-printing mistakes to avoid

A few quick checks before you print can make the difference between a shirt that looks good and one that looks great. Use this checklist to catch common issues before they become permanent.

  • Using a low-resolution image. Start with the highest-resolution original photo you have to avoid blurry or pixelated prints.
  • Changing the DPI instead of the pixel dimensions. Increasing the DPI label alone won’t improve print quality if your image doesn’t have enough pixels. Always check that your pixel count matches the size of your design.
  • Skipping a background cleanup. Zoom in after removing the background to smooth rough edges and remove leftover artifacts.
  • Letting shadows get too dark. Brighten deep shadows slightly so important details don’t disappear in print.
  • Expecting an exact color match. Preview your design on the shirt color and use high-contrast colors for the most accurate-looking results.
  • Ignoring the print-safe area. Keep faces, logos and text well within the printable area to avoid awkward cropping.

Yes. Scan it at 600 PPI if possible, especially for an enlarged print. Clean dust and scratches on a copy, preserve an untouched master and avoid sharpening faces until they look grainy.

Should I sharpen a photo before printing it on fabric?

A little sharpening after resizing can help because fabric softens fine detail. At 100% view, stop if you see bright halos, crunchy hair or exaggerated skin texture.

Do I need permission to print someone else’s photo or artwork?

Usually, yes. Use your own photo, obtain permission or choose properly licensed imagery. For merchandise, confirm that the license covers product sales and seek consent before using someone’s photo or artwork.

Can I add names, dates or a message around the photo?
