The chemistry of pre-treatment on dark fabrics

Pre-treatment acts as an essential chemical primer that prevents water-based white inks from absorbing into dark garment fibers.

On a black, navy or other dark garment, the DTG printer first creates a white underbase. Because CMYK inks are translucent, their colors would disappear into the fabric dye without it. A water-based polymer solution is therefore sprayed evenly over the print area before the garment reaches the press.

The solution presses down loose fibers to create a smoother canvas and forms an ionic barrier that reacts with the white ink. This quickly coagulates the ink, keeping its pigment near the surface instead of letting it sink into the yarn. That bright surface layer gives the transparent CMYK inks a clean foundation, much like priming a wall before adding color.

What are the best fabrics for DTG printing?

The blank garment has a major say in the result. Fiber content, knit quality and smoothness all affect color, clarity and wash life, so fabric choice matters in direct to garment printing. Two shirts in the same color can produce noticeably different results if their fiber blends or surface textures vary.

Handling cotton-poly blends and synthetic restrictions

Polyester and synthetic blends require specialized low-bleed inks and adjusted curing temperatures to prevent dye migration.

Direct-to-garment printing gets trickier as polyester content rises. The hydrophobic material resists water-based pigment ink, which may sit on the surface, spread or lose detail.

Another party crasher is dye migration. During curing, polyester dyes can turn into gas and travel into fresh white or pale ink, giving a crisp graphic an unwanted pink, gray or blue tint.

With DTG printing, the file goes straight to a DTG printer without physical screens. It suits limited drops, gifts, samples and colorful designs, while an impression DTG setup can handle changing orders without rebuilding the press.

What file format should I use for DTG artwork?

A high-resolution PNG with a transparent background is a practical choice for many designs, while some providers also accept PDF, TIFF or PSD files. Aim for 300 DPI at the intended print size, and check your printer’s exact file requirements before uploading. Tiny web images may look fine on a phone but turn fuzzy when enlarged across a shirt.

Can a DTG design print over seams, pockets or zippers?

It can be attempted on some garments, but a flat, unobstructed print area produces more reliable results. Seams, pockets and zippers prevent the platen and printhead from maintaining an even distance, which can create gaps, blur or inconsistent color. Keep important details away from raised construction whenever possible.

Can DTG produce neon, metallic or glow-in-the-dark colors?

Standard DTG inks use white and CMYK pigments, so they cannot create a true metallic shine, fluorescent neon or glow effect on their own. A screen-printed specialty ink, foil or another finishing process is usually better for those effects. A digital file can imitate the color of gold or neon, but not its reflective or luminous behavior.
