People love using promotional products (even more than last year!)

Great news for businesses—promotional products are getting the attention they deserve. In 2025, 83% of consumers are actively using the branded items they receive, up from just 54% in 2024.

As companies shift toward useful items that have everyday purposes—like reusable water bottles, wireless headphones or high-quality phone accessories—fewer branded trinkets end up forgotten. Plus, with more people working from different locations, branded tools that help with organization or comfort have found their way into regular use at home offices and shared workspaces. So, whether it’s pens, tote bags or any other branded merchandise, rest assured these items are actually being put to work, not forgotten in a drawer.

Even better, 58% of consumers now say they remember your brand after receiving a promotional product, a significant nine-point increase from 2024. This means that every piece of swag you give away helps you create lasting brand recall and keep your business at the forefront of the consumers’ minds.

2025 Promotional trends

Promotional products drive real results

Beyond just being remembered, promotional products actually impact consumer behavior. After receiving branded swag, 40% of consumers are more likely to revisit your business and 39% say they’d shop with you again.

What’s even more powerful is the way these products influence consumer perception: 58% of respondents said receiving a promotional product positively changed how they view a brand. That’s a powerful shift in sentiment from a single branded item; the right branded merchandise can turn your customers into brand advocates

Finally, 44% of consumers find promotional products to be more memorable than traditional advertising, showing that tangible items leave a stronger mark than digital or print ads.

Practical promotional product ideas are user favorites

Although promotional products are more popular than ever, some items stand out more than others. Our survey shows that usefulness is the number one priority for consumers. A massive 80% of respondents, up from 53% in 2024, said practicality is their top priority when evaluating swag.

The classics—pens, T-shirts and tote bags—are still leading the pack. Pens, in particular, are the most-used promotional product, with 55% of consumers regularly reaching for them. T-shirts (26%) and tote bags (25%) continue to be favorites as well.

But practicality doesn’t have to mean dull. While consumers want items they’ll actually use, 41% also want them to be unique, appreciating unique company swag ideas.

This balance of function and flair offers businesses a chance to create promotional products that serve a purpose and stand out. So, when selecting the top promotional products, remember: practical and unique is the winning combo.

Your branded swag speaks volumes about your business

Uniqueness in promotional products often shows up in the design. Consumers are increasingly drawn to promotional items that aren’t just useful but also visually appealing. Our 2025 survey found that 60% of consumers prioritize products with eye-catching designs, an 11 percentage point increase from 2024. This trend holds true across genders, with women (61%) and men (59%) attracted to items that pop.

But it’s more than just the visual appeal that matters. A thoughtful selection of promotional products shows how well a brand understands its audience’s needs, wants and current trends. In fact, the study reveals that 31% of consumers believe the right products reflect a brand’s knowledge of its customers.

So, before you order those branded pens or tote bags, ask yourself: What message does your choice send about your business? If you want your branded swag to truly speak volumes, check out our guide on how to make merch to get it just right.

Logos, taglines and thoughtful branding make all the difference

When it comes to branding on promotional products, the details matter: 25% of respondents prefer items with a logo and tagline, while 24% favor a clearly visible brand name and 20% prefer just the logo.

Generation-specific preferences also stand out. Boomers (25%) and Millennials (26%) lean toward products with a clear brand name, while Gen X (25%) and Millennials (28%) are more drawn to logos with taglines. Gen Z (24%) favors a logo-only design.

Different strokes for different folks

Our 2025 promotional product trends reveal even preferences along gender and generational lines. Women show a particular fondness for tote bags (53%) and pens (54%), while men gravitate toward T-shirts (50%) and mugs (39%). This insight can be marketing gold if your business caters to a specific gender.

Gen Z is leading the way for apparel-based swag, with 41% preferring hoodies, by far the highest of any generation. They’re also the most likely to keep promotional products because they feel unique or personal (39%). In contrast, Boomers and Gen X tend to stick with practical classics like pens and calendars.

Trade shows (27%), sports events (24%) and venue openings (24%) also continue to be key distribution channels.

However, some consumers have seasonal preferences: 9% prefer receiving products in the spring, 7% in the summer and 4% around major holidays.

Consumers are buying promotional products themselves

Promotional products aren’t just for giveaways—they’re also something consumers want to buy. In our survey, 71% of respondents said they’d purchase a product they like and will use, while 43% would buy to support the business.
