Optimism and resilience are high<\/h2>\n

New research paints a strikingly optimistic portrait of America’s entrepreneurs. Despite macro headwinds, today\u2019s small business owners aren\u2019t just surviving \u2013 they\u2019re thriving. In fact, 61%<\/strong> say they\u2019re happier now compared to when they first opened their doors, and nearly half (43%)<\/strong> report being happier than they were last year.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n <\/div>\n\n

Why’s everyone so dang happy?<\/h2>\n

The owners finding the most fulfillment are those focused on what they can control. Of those who report being happier today than when they first opened their small business, 38%<\/strong> attribute it to internal, day-to-day factors, rather than external or macroeconomic conditions (11%)<\/strong>.

\nAlongside autonomy, other top factors include pursuing a passion (47%)<\/strong> and their ability to control the certainty of their income (35%).<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n <\/div>\n\n

The (very real) challenges<\/h2>\n

Business ownership brings trade-offs \u2013 and small business owners are clear on the realities (and difficulties) they face.<\/p>\n

In addition to income uncertainty, poor work-life balance (40%)<\/strong> and keeping up with evolving business trends (38%)<\/strong> are the other top pain points. But while the pressures are real, the majority feel confident in their choices, with 83%<\/strong> reporting they\u2019re happier now compared to when they worked for someone else.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n <\/div>\n\n

Confidence in the future is strong<\/h2>\n

Despite uncertainties, 70%<\/strong> of small businesses are optimistic about the future and express confidence in their ability to grow. Their top three investments for the year ahead\u00a0include marketing and customer acquisition (51%)<\/strong>, business operations (51%)<\/strong>, investing in staff (34%)<\/strong> and technology and automation (34%).<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n <\/div>\n\n

VistaPrint commissioned YouGov to conduct a research study of 610 small business owners aged 21 to 64 and with 100 employees or less, located in the United States.
