Then the internet came along in the 1990s and the number of websites exploded. The new channels that have popped up, like Facebook in 2004 and Google in 2007, have created a whole new arena for marketing.<\/p>\n<p>In the early days, the approach to digital marketing was the same as the traditional marketing approach, just using the new channels: talk about your products on your own website, run some banner ads on other popular websites and online publications (just like print ads in magazines) and then sell your products or services in the same way you\u2019ve always sold them. With time, marketers realized that digital offered a whole new way of interacting with and selling to customers and that demanded a much different approach (more on this in a minute).<\/p>\n<p>Another change is that marketing departments used to have a digital team that was separate from the traditional team working on TV and print. Today, everything in marketing is digital and it needs to be fully integrated into your company\u2019s overall marketing strategy and organization.<\/p>\n<h2><a name=\"whyis\"><\/a>Why is digital marketing important for your business?<\/h2>\n<p>You don\u2019t need to be a digital expert to know that your customers are spending a lot of time (and money) online these days. Like, a LOT. (It also levels the playing field between big and small companies as you can achieve a lot and really stand out against your competitors without a massive advertising budget.)<\/li>\n<li>It\u2019s much more targeted and can be \u2018hyper-personalized\u2019 to a very specific target.<\/li>\n<li>It\u2019s also very fast and flexible. What\u2019s your overall vision for the business? What are your goals for this year? That means you\u2019ll be getting your message across. and your client will actually be interested in what you have to say.<\/p>\n<h4>The latest digital content trends<\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Video production<\/strong>: Facebook, YouTube, Instagram&#8230; All the big platforms are pushing video and that means your videos will automatically be seen by more people than articles and pretty pictures alone. It\u2019s not as simple as uploading one video or blog post onto Facebook. It\u2019s also not very effective to post the same piece of content on every channel in the exact same format. You need to choose the right channel based on your objective, the type of content you\u2019ve created and where your target audience is hanging out.<\/p>\n<h4>The latest channel trends<\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Facebook groups<\/strong>: With the algorithm changing so that pages and page posts are less impactful, Facebook has been focusing more on groups\u2014and you should do the same. Groups can help you build an engaged community of genuine fans of your brand.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Influencer marketing<\/strong>: Partnering with people who are seen as role models or experts for your target audience can be a great way to <em>influence<\/em> that audience to consider your brand. You just need to make sure you do this transparently and authentically (see #5 below!).<\/li>\n<li><strong>Social messaging apps<\/strong>: Your customers are spending more and more time on apps like WhatsApp and Messenger. Most brands haven\u2019t started marketing on those channels so far but if you want to be an innovator, there\u2019s a lot of potential there to build more direct and meaningful relationships with your audiences.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Artificial intelligence (AI)<\/strong>: No, robots are not taking over the world (yet) but using chatbots to answer customer messages can free up your team to work on bigger priorities. Now that digital marketing is quite mature and more and more businesses have woken up to the importance of content, there is quite a lot of content out there.<\/p>\n<p>In a cluttered space, where everyone is being bombarded with marketing messages every day and there are tighter regulations around data privacy, how you execute your strategy is as important as the strategy itself.<\/p>\n<h4>Current best practices<\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Distribution over creation<\/strong>: Most businesses are now busy creating content and that means you need to work even harder for that content to be seen. Don\u2019t just post once and think that\u2019s enough\u2014you need to publish, promote and re-publish across all your channels.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Engagement over reach<\/strong>: In the early days, you\u2019d have been excited about getting a load of likes on your Facebook page. Today,\u00a0 the number of followers is less important than the number of genuinely active followers, the people who are seeing, engaging with and responding to your content. These are the metrics you should be looking at improving.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Personalization<\/strong>: People are sick of mass marketing and want <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.marketo.com\/2019\/02\/how-marketers-can-reach-peak-personalization-in-2019.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">tailored content and messages<\/a> that speak directly to them. Look at how you can bring the personal touch and engage on a one-to-one basis. (You can even use chatbots to help you scale.)<\/li>\n<li><strong>Authenticity<\/strong>: Your customers, especially the famous <a href=\"https:\/\/vistaprint.com\/hub\/millennial-marketing-branding\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Millennials<\/a> and the generations after them, are cynical about businesses over-promising and under-delivering. They prefer honesty and being \u2018real\u2019 over perfection and being \u2018fake\u2019 so try to embrace that in your marketing.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Transparency<\/strong>: Given everyone\u2019s worries about hacking and misuse of their data, customers are increasingly placing more value on an honest and open approach where it\u2019s clear exactly what a business is going to do with their data and why.
